History

Browning Funeral HomeThe roots of Browning Funeral Home began in Ecru, Mississippi, in 1909. This is when E. L. Browning purchased a hardware and furniture store. Factory-built caskets were an item stocked by the store, inspiring Mr. Browning to pursue funeral service with the help of his son, Brantley.

Pegues Funeral Home in Tupelo performed all the embalming work at the time. When a tornado struck Tupelo in 1936, Brantley realized the need for more morticians in the area. He enrolled in mortuary school in St. Louis, and returned in 1940 as a licensed embalmer serving Ecru, Pontotoc, Ripley, Houston and Okolona.

After E. L. Browning’s death in 1959, his son, Brantley, and son-in-law, D. D. Sneed, continued his work while Bobby Parker served as the embalmer and funeral director. In 1986, Brantley’s son, Ronnie, assumed operations, sharing ownership with his mother, Mable West Browning, and his aunts, Jewel Sneed and Emily Browning.

Today, we continue to serve our neighbors in Northern Mississippi with hospitality, sensitivity and respect. It is our pleasure to make a positive contribution to the community we call home.
